Polish home cooking & food experiences in Gdańsk

Hosted in home kitchens around the Tricity
3 cooks · 1 upcoming experience · 9 reviews · since 2016

What you'll learn depends on who you book with. Some hosts focus on Pomeranian classics: ryba po grecku (fish with vegetables in tomato), gołąbki, fasolka po bretońsku. Others specialise in Polish-Jewish baking. There's also a vegan cook doing plant-based Polish food. The price range is wider than in Kraków because some sessions are more workshop-style and others are more of a sit-down dinner with cooking worked in.

Booking in summer? Do it well ahead. Saint Dominic's Fair fills the city through late July and early August.

More about Gdańsk's food scene

Gdańsk's food culture sits in a strange spot between Polish, German, and Baltic. The city was a Hanseatic port for centuries and you can taste it. Smoked fish from the bay. Yeast cakes that look German. Rye breads heavier than what they bake in Warsaw. The home cooking tradition here pulls from all of it.

Neighbourhoods worth knowing: the Main Town (Główne Miasto, home to the postcard-famous Long Market), Oliwa up north with its cathedral and quieter streets, and Wrzeszcz, which doesn't get tourists but is where younger residents actually live. Most cooks host in flats in or near these districts. A walk from the train station out to a Wrzeszcz kitchen takes about twenty minutes.
