Delicious gifts from Lithuania

shared meal Vilnius, Lithuania

My philosophy is that tasty, nourishing natural, whole food should be eaten fresh and in season. I prefer cooking from scratch. I bake my own bread. I grow my own vegetables in my modest garden near my house. It's also been our family tradition and hobby to gather herbs, berries, and mushrooms from Lithuania's wild forests, year after year, season after season. Because of this, a huge proportion of what we eat comes straight from the land and most of our dishes are based on what's in season.

My menu consists of 4 courses. For the first course, you‘ll enjoy Lithuanian cheese bites flavored with a spicy wild cowberry jam. I call it "Introduction to the Lithuanian kitchen". The second course is a home-made chicken liver pâté, served with germinated seeds and herb butter. As a main dish, you'll enjoy chicken in the friendly company of apricots and spinach baked, as a whole, in a crispy pastry. A pear stuffed with blue cheese and baked in the oven will join them on your plate. And finally, the desert: a delicious coffee mousse!

I‘ll be happy to serve you with local herbal tea and soft drinks.

My name is Ruta. I lived in Vilnius all my life. When I was a child, I spent hours in my grandma‘s kitchen watching her cook. She shared with me her passion for food and taught me how to create incredible dishes with simple, quality products. For me cooking is a relaxing meditation through which I express my creativity. I also see cooking as being very much like painting. The products I use in my dishes are like the colours a painter uses on canvas to create images. And the myriad of tones and colours one sees in paintings are just like the unforgettable flavours and smells one tastes in great cooking. My family and friends have been my food tasters, teachers and critics for years. I feel now that it is time I opened my kitchen to you. Welcome!

We were really looking forward to our meal with Ruta. She picked us up at our hotel and drove us to her fabulous house. We were introduced to her husband as a fourth dinner guest. What a lovely evening we had- wonderful food, cooked by someone who is obviously in love with cooking. We had some great conversation and learnt a great deal about our host's country and history. Don't hesitate to book this evening - we will remember it for a long time.
